CEC: Guide to the Library’s Electronic Databases

Accessing Electronic Databases

Databases can be accessed from your gnspes account. On the launch page you will see the heading Learning Resources. Click on the Research icon and you will be taken to a list of research resources. Scroll down the page and choose the EBSCO link.

You will now see a box that lets you continue onto the next page. Before continuing you must choose the databases you wish to search within EBSCO. You may wish to select them all in order to give you the maximum number of results. However, this choice is up to you.

Now you are ready to begin your search.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make sure you limit your results by checking off the Full Text box. This ensures you will retrieve the entire article(s).

You now have several options including a Basic Search and an Advanced Search.

Within EBSCO you can search specific publications (Maclean’s, National Geographic, etc.), you can look for specific topics (current events), and you can limit your search by publication type (newspaper, report, etc.)

EBSCO also has an image collection and several videos.

Images may be printed for personal, non-commercial use; used in presentations for educational use consistent with the Copyright Act; but may not be posted on the Web or used in any other form of mass media.

You can save articles to a personal folder, print, or e-mail documents.

You can also listen to several articles and there is a translate option.

How do I cite EBSCO images?

-When referencing images that come from articles, it is perfectly acceptable to cite the parent article.
-If you want to specifically cite the image, use the article citation and make the following changes:

  • Check the article content for additional source information, such as a photographer or illustrator.
  • If an alternate name is available, use that in place of the article's author(s).
  • If the image has a title or caption, use that in place of the article title.
  • After the article or image title and before the journal title, insert the image type. Image types are: Chart, Diagram, Graph, Illustration, Map, or Photograph.
  • Replace the page range of the article with the page number for the image.

How do I create a personal folder?

Choose the Sign In option on the top blue bar.
Here you will see the option of creating an account where you can save items.
This is also where you will sign into your account and view your folder once your account has been created.
